Pollies, Today if someone is retired at 62 and up to (x yrs?) like Rayyy the Wal-Mart greeter, are allowed to earn (y Bucks Max?) before they have to forgo $1 for every $3 earned. How come they stop working when they max out?

It must be that they have aquired all the money they need.

Here's a possible:
If you are under full retirement age all year. You are entitled to $800 a month in benefits ($9,600 for the year).

You work 50 weeks at 40 hours a week @ 10.50 an hour and earn $21,560 ($8,000 over the $13,560 limit) during the year. Your Social Security benefits would be reduced by $4,000 ($1 for every $2 you earned over the limit... it will be $3 in 2009), but you would still receive $5,600 of your $9600 in benefits for the year. ($9,600 - $4,000 = $5,600)

Now $4,000 that has been deducted from SS at $10.50 an hour is 9.5 weeks

If you worked the full 50 weeks and earned $21,560 + 5,600 SS your total taxable income would be $27,160

If you worked to the allowed limit of $13,560 + 9,600 SS your total taxable income would be $23,160 a difference of $5,000

$27,160 @ 15% tax = 23,086

$23,160 @ 15% tax = 19,686

A difference of $3,400

So for $358 a week you could have a 9,5 week vacation... plus the two you wouldn't have worked anyway giving you 2 plus months off from work...

The idea of drawing social security is not to see how to use the system, but how to exist without maximum effort. After the life time of work, some of us just want to have a little time not consumed by the complete pursuit of the almighty dollar. At my age I know my abilities are diminished & shall seek to make life simpler not trying to achieve that which escaped me in a life time. There is a practical side to life that a lot of people seem to forget. They are too busy worrying what their peers will think or say.I say to them. You pay my bills & I`ll think about living to the standard you set.If not accept me or move on.I have lived in a world not of my making.I should have some rights about whether I want their way of life.I have done my time. After a lifetime of hearing what this ,that & the other says is best,it is my considered opinion that I haven`t seen anyone with the right solution yet.I`ll try my way as best I can.

I will tell you this.If the past way is the right way,Why have I lost money for last seven months.Damn poor people had nothing to do with that mess other than not earning enough to hold the economy up.Who`s fault is it they dont have jobs or anything in the bank.Could be all their saving money went into fuel prices. Both gas & heating.Of course the price of food went up a lot because of that.

egotarian, that was quite a thoughtful financial analysis of the early retirement social security benefit in relationship to the amount of money that was the ideal cap for earned income in the same year. my vote is to have you replace bernanke in washington. that little sawed-off varmint is the master of mumblespeak. i am not convinced that he has a clue. junkyarddog

Pollie... It's statements like that that brings to mind a certain Lady of History

Marie Antoinette, whose most famous quote, upon hearing that the people didn't have any bread was... "Let them eat cake"!

of course, the people, whose bellies were rumbling, didn't think too highly of that statement and decided to take her down by about a head or so...

Not a big buff of mythology, but know a few.I have heard enough myths in real life.If you want myths, just ask a stupid redneck about something unfamiliar to him.His susperstitions create all sorts of unfounded myth.As the old leaders used myth to scare the peasants into line,so does some of the campaigns use the same idea.

i went looking for an image of a transgender and i thought about the bartender in the movie Shrek and i came across this article...

Published on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 by the Canadian Press
Shrek Character is Target of Traditional Values Religious Group
by John McKay

TORONTO -- The hit feature Shrek 2 joins the ranks of animated films to be "outed" by some Christian fundamentalists in the U.S., who charge that cross-dressing and transgender themes have made their way into the beloved kids' movie and warn parents to beware.

Although many people see the Oscar-nominated film as a humorous story about a green ogre and his true love, the Traditional Values Coalition has a different take on the animated feature.

"Shrek 2 is billed as harmless entertainment but contains subtle sexual messages," the coalition says on its website of the movie, a popular DVD rental. The group describes itself as a grassroots inter-denominational lobby with more than 43,000 member churches.

"Parents who are thinking about taking their children to see Shrek 2 may wish to consider the following."

The article then proceeds to describe one of the characters, an "evil" bartender (voiced by Larry King) who is a male-to-female transgender in transition and who expresses a sexual desire for Prince Charming.

In another identified scene, Shrek and Donkey need rescuing from a dungeon by Pinocchio and his nose, which is made to extend as an escape bridge by getting the wooden boy to lie about not wearing women's underwear.

Shrek 2 has plenty of company. Christian activists have also targeted SpongeBob SquarePants, Barney the dinosaur and Sesame Street's Bert & Ernie as children's characters who are conduits for a soft-on-gays message.

The Traditional Values Coalition report, A Gender Identity Disorder Goes Mainstream, raps DreamWorks, the maker of Shrek 2, for helping to promote crossdressing and transgenderism.

But Charles Keil, a film studies professor at the University of Toronto, says transgendered groups might also have reason to complain about being parodied.

"You have an image within a comic context that could be read either way," says Keil, who adds quickly that such humour is designed for parents anyway and goes way above the heads of the children in the audience.

"If the kids don't get it, it doesn't really matter."

Keil says the whole idea behind the Shrek movies is a general message of tolerance - that outward appearances don't matter and that it's what's underneath that counts - and such complaints defeat that larger, more important message.

You know things are amiss when cartoons are starting to be controversal.Between South Park & the Simpsons its no wonder.I CAN`T BELIEVE THOSE TWO SHOWS WERE PERMITED TO STAY ON THE AIR.The reason was obvious. It was being watched by the adult juvenile mentality.
