I hope people aren`t thin skinned here.I know I dont get mad.I have had my feeling hurt a few times, but I got over it.I just know that when they get personal,I got the better of them & they never had any other way of responding without admitting they`d been bested.Cie La Vie.

Goldman Sachs chief financial officer, said that GS doesn't need to hook up with a commercial bank to survive. He played down the benefits that such a paring would have on the investment bank and maintained that the firm is doing well despite a 70 percent drop in profits in what he described as “the most challenging operating environment since becoming a public company.”  Don't Worry Be Happy...

Does every one of these Wall st sacred cows have the mad cow disease.3yrs ago all these companies were being runby stellar celebrity financial geniuses. The CEOs were getting sweetheart deals out of this world for underwriting shitty risk loans. Now their being exposed as high roller gamblers.Goldman Sachs as been considered a paradigm, but is having a fall from grace. If our leadership hadnt had its head up their ass, while trying to play Napoleon we could have avoid a lot of this pain.

As bank failures mount and fear rises, the result will be a rush away from smaller banks toward ones that the government deems too big to fail. But since that will be a crowded trek, I checked in with analyst Whalen for a list of banks he considers the most stable and best of breed. His favorites:

Northern Trust (NTRS, news, msgs), based in Chicago, has one of the best fundamental performance records in the business. Its profits are one standard deviation above those of its peers through June 30, and its loan default rate in the second quarter this year was just 0.03%. The main reason is that its noninterest income is four times greater than its net interest income, meaning that it doesn't depend on loans to make a profit. Whalen believes its performance margin compared with those of its peers will widen over the next few quarters as banks with more credit exposure take a beating.

US Bancorp (USB, news, msgs), based in Minneapolis, still has a return on equity of 22% and has a high proportion of its income coming from nonloan services. It has charged off 1% of its total loans and is adding to loan-loss reserves at a 2-1 ratio without cutting dividends, which speaks well for management. Whalen says it is very unlikely that US Bancorp, "one of the best-performing commercial banks in the world," will ever need to obtain additional capital or sell itself to outsiders.

Washington Federal (WFSL, news, msgs), a thrift based in Seattle, reported a 10.1% return on equity through the second quarter, compared with a negative 4% for peers. Returns have tracked a full standard deviation above those of its rivals. Its main operating unit reported just 0.21% of loan defaults versus 1.26% for its peers. It has received advances from the Federal Home Loan Bank system equal to 16% of its assets, but its strong capital position and profitability still make it a top choice for cash deposits.

Charles Schwab Bank (SCHW, news, msgs), based in San Francisco and the thrift subsidiary of a discount brokerage, has an "eye-popping" return on equity of 27%, which is 1.26 standard deviations above those of its peers, making it almost countercyclical. With virtually no credit losses in the second quarter, Whalen calls the thrift subsidiary of Schwab a "pretty safe place to stash your loot" and says it deserves kudos for its success in a declining credit market.

Bank of Hawaii (BOH, news, msgs), based in Honolulu, sports a return on equity of 26% and is a full standard deviation above its peers in funding its loans. With just a 0.46% charge-off rate and high average maturity of its loans, Whalen thinks it has done a beautiful job in a tough environment.

But others are holding their own and then some, and it's probably worth the trouble to move your funds there just to be safe.

Forget the lipstick, economy takes over campaign
AP - 20 minutes ago

AP - Economic fears are suddenly dominating the presidential campaign, shoving aside lipstick on pigs and every other issue. Republican John McCain called for a crisis commission Tuesday, while Democrat Barack Obama laughed that off as "the oldest Washington stunt in the book."

You have a one track mind dude. Like a dog with a bone, I feel the same about Obama as you do about McCain, but trying to focus on reality and what is happening at present. As far as the candidates, let the chips fall where they may for good or bad, kind of like marriage, lol. You will be married to one of them for at least 4 years whether you like it or not, lol.

After watching the price of propane for homes & the price of heating oil,I think maybe they too needed to be regulated by the public service commissions.

I could be wrong, but I feel that if Obama weren`t half black he`d be so damn far ahead the election process would be a waste of money this time.Myself.Im not falling for that racial profiling shit.Wrink this is not aimed at you in no way. This is at all the people that linked Obama to Wright even after he denounce Wright`s words. He had to make a choice between ethnic background & patriotism. He chose the latter.I think it was commendable.I understood what Wright was condemning, but politicos chose to take it out of context.Just like the lipstick on a pig.He was saying America should not be praised for their indescretions against Indians or blacks, but should be condemned for such acts against humanity. He used a choice of words that was twisted & played for maximum political effect.I dont have a doctrate in political science, but know exactly what he was implying.Like I said,I was a racist in my younger day.Studying history showed me exactly what had taken place & why & who was responsible.Unfortunately neither side has actually sit down & ironed the past out.I didn`t own slaves, blacks didnt kill indians for their land or mineral rights or trapping grounds. You didn`t kill indians either. Its time to put this animosity to rest & live as one people.A black man that is 70 or 80 yrs old has been here longer than I have & has the right to call himself American as much as the person whose ancestors where Irish,English,French,Italian or Pole or whatever.A portion of my ancestors were native American, but Im still an American.Obama may be half black, but he`s still the more intelligent of the two.He has a better concept of the economy, experience or not.Thats what I see.Its not black or white,Dem or Rep.Its who will actually care for the poor & lower middle class. The man with money is not in danger unless he gets stupid.

Now this headline seems to cause some wonderment as to what does she have to hide.
GOP lawmakers sue to stop Palin investigation By STEVE QUINN, Associated Press Writer
12 minutes ago

JUNEAU, Alaska - Five Republican state lawmakers filed suit Tuesday to end the bipartisan investigation into Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's firing of the public safety commissioner even though the vice presidential candidate once said she welcomed the probe into allegations of abuse of power.

I think this was just a ploy for election votes. If McCain wins she`ll end up resigning & McCain will put a more traditional republican in the VP slot.Another Spiro Agnew deal.
